Smith & Wesson SWEX1 Extreme Ops. Drop Point Knife Review
I just got this knife today (a day earlier than estimated by Amazon), so I'll only be giving initial impressions. Time and motivation allowing I might do an update after some use and abuse to this folder. I chose this one because I really liked the blade length of 3.3", many knives I viewed were 3.5" and longer or 3.0" and less; I was really looking for something in between. I also liked the fact that the metal is black coated and the function and aesthetics of the handle with the design of the grip and the curved finger grooves. First initial impression; I am very satisfied about choosing this knife!
Pros:
-Really nice fit and finish; all screws are tight and this thing feels solid
-Smooth one-hand opening and closing right out of the box, thumb button is easy to manipulate
-Handle and grip fit my hand really well (I have large hands), I don't foresee any grip slippage problems
-Has good balance
-Has good blade thickness (solid) though not sure exactly what grade of metal they used
-Positive blade lockout with the flick of the wrist, using the thumb button, or using both hands
-Rubberized aluminum handle
-Clip sits pretty low in the pocket
Cons:
-The pocket clip is super tight, I had to flex it just so it'd go over my shorts pocket
-Although minor, I don't like the position of the pocket clip at the blade pivot, I actually prefer mine at the handle butt and it's not reversible for you lefty's out there but can be removed with a small torx (I'm going to see how I like it before removing the clip)
-Blade was a bit dull out of the box, but a few passes with the diafold sharpener and it's good to go
All in all, I'm initially really happy with this knife. Aside from my hang-ups about where the pocket clip is attached, for the price (got it for $21.32), this seems to be a good piece of hardware. As long as it holds it up (mfd. in China by Taylor Brands), I plan to use it as my everyday whatever knife. It does come with the lifetime warranty for repair or replacement so S&W stands behind their product.
