Fein MSXE-636-2RS MultiMaster Variable Speed Tool with 9 Accessory Attachments Review

When I bought the MultiMaster 2XL Kit, I wondered how much I would actually use it in my "Handyman" business. Since I "bit the bullet" and spent the money about a year ago I have come to wonder how I lived without this amazing tool for so long.

In the last two days I have used it to: #1 Cut through the grout lines and cement backer-board to allow access to frozen pipes hidden between a tiled shower and a masonry outer wall. It cut cleanly, allowing me to replace the tiles, still on the backerboard and regrout with no tiles damaged for a clean repair. #2 Cut through the back of a tiled-in vanity to access more frozen pipes. The ability to cut straight into and through a variety of materials with a minimum of mess and collateral damage, in places that defy cutting with any other tool, is priceless in my work. #3. Cut through old, multilayered paint on antique baseboard, top, side, mitered corner, and flush at the floor, to allow me to remove it without damage to the baseboard, floor or plaster wall, again to access frozen pipes requiring repair. I was able to replace the baseboard with only a barely visible caulk line and tiny 21 gauge headless brad holes to bear evidence that I had even been there. #4. I sanded right-up to an inside corner on a stair tread to allow blending of old and new wood. You must allow the tool to do the work, rotating the paper to access all 3 edges and changing the paper when it ceases to cut or you will trash the sanding pad, but it is a remarkable sander when used carefully.

ALL the accessories are VASTLY overpriced so buy the 2XL kit and get as many as possible included with the tool. I do not understand why they have to be so expensive. It certainly isn't because they are exceptionally tough. I have taken to using 4" diameter HSS jeweler's saw blades for many cutting jobs when being flush to a surface doesn't matter.

I bill time and material in my business and I do bill my customer when I destroy a blade on a screw or nails. (I killed 2 flush saw blades today so I buy them 3 at a time to lower the cost each a little.)

Despite the cost of accessories I highly recommend this amazingly useful tool. It will allow you to do some jobs faster, easier, and cleaner than you ever could have imagined without it.

Campbell Hausfeld TL1004 Dual Action Sander Review

Out of the box this thing worked great. However, a couple of things to consider before purchasing this particular brand/model sander. It uses around 10SCFM @ 90PSI. This is a high air demand tool and for those of you that don't already have that high of an output air compressor or don't have the extra $$$ to pony up like myself you probably should avoid this sander from the get go. I would recommend having no less than a 6-8 SCFM compressor to even consider this as it made my 4SCFM compressor 26 gallon run CONSTANTLY when sanding a fender for my truck (not good). I now have a craftsman DA sander that cost about 30.00 more but only requires 3.1 SCFM to operate therefor an extremely lower load on my compressor that works just as good.

The really bad: About 2/3rds of the way sanding through my fender this sander got stuck in the what seemed like ON position. The switch or some other component inside failed and would not shut off. I had to use the built in regulator to slow it down enough to stop it and unplug the hose. Could be dangerous or at least scare the crap out of you like it did me. I wound up taking it apart and checking everything out and rebuilding it but I could never figure the darn thing out and wound up trashing it for the less demanding craftsman DA.

I've quickly found out with air tools you get what you pay for. Sometimes it really isn't worth it to try and save yourself 30.00 especially when the tool only lasts all but 1-2 hours of usage. In my opinion/experience with this sander is they might as well label it a D Sander - Disposable Sander instead of a DA.

Also: I did oil this sander prior to first use, I did not drop it, bang it, or place it under any excessive stress during its short time in operation. Don't think it's my error.

I bought two of these and am glad I did. They are considered light duty so I was not expecting much - they were heavier than I thought they would be. I needed to perform some torch-cutting and minor welding in a small space and needed to cover some items that I did not want damaged by the sparks flying around. These worked well.

The only "con" I have is that while working with these my shirt, apron, and gloves ended up with tiny strands of what I'm assuming is the fiberglass these blankets are made of. I'm guessing that is the difference between coated and non-coated... these are non.

Overall, for the price, these were better than I expected. I would recommend them.
