These are excellent pliers, worth the money. The jaws don't lose alignment when you twist wires, and operate very smoothly. The serrations in the jaws are also very fine and clean and hold object well. The finish is very smooth and the grips are comfortable and don't pull off. I use to like Whia products, but I think Knipex is better quality. I also own some of their other tools and they are all first-rate.

Rough Rider Knives 573 Camp Knife with Red Jigged Bone Handles Review

This was my second foray into the "Rough Rider" stable. The knife arrived in perfect condition and on the expected date. Nice to be able to rely on quick shipment and gentle handling.

The knife itself was something of a departure from the style of camp knife that many of us grew up with, but not a major one, not a deal-breaker. The main blade was pretty difficult to deploy (actually, all 4 blades were hard to get open), but snapped into position as solidly as one might expect for this style of folder and was shaving-sharp out of the box. The "short blade," as it is described in the listing - not so sharp, and I'm still trying to figure out what it's for. Is it a new style of can opener blade? If so, the little stud is on the wrong side of the blade, at least for right-handers. Is it an extra-wide reamer? Guess I'll fiddle with it a bit and see what it's purpose is.

The screwdriver/bottle opener blade is pretty long for such a tool, but otherwise appears utilitarian. The awl or punch looks like it could be poked through a piece of leather, but it lacks the traditional hole for thread. One could be drilled, I suppose, if that would make it more useful.

The bone scales look pretty nice, and their fit is good. I like natural materials (bone, wood) for knife handles and scales. They look like they'll stay on for the duration (given proper handling and no deliberate abuse). The bolsters have a high polish that has a somewhat brassy luster to it. Overall, it looks like fair value for the money, with some useful features. The bale is a nice touch, traditional on a knife of this style, plenty big enough to add a leather latigo or a lanyard, and it looks securely attached. That's a good thing.

So, 4 stars. Might have given it 5 if it had been obvious what the "short blade" was for.

I'm a German trained master goldsmith with over 40 years experience as well as a life long tool junkie. I saw one of these at my dentist's and was going to order one but, when I saw the price in his dental supply catalog, I had sticker shock. It was over $100! When I saw this one from Jack's Tool Shed, I jumped on it. If it turned out to be garbage, I could always send it back. When it arrived, I immediately inspected it for material quality, fit, finish and functionality and was extremely impressed with how it compared with my German, Swiss and Japanese hand tools. If none of the tools were marked with manufacturer or country of origin marks, it would be impossible to tell the difference. The only drawback is that they are smaller than I like, but since they're for working with fine wire or thin strips it's not really an issue. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them or purchase them again. They're great for the the price and as good at twenty times the price.

MAXCRAFT 60255 3/8-Inch Drive Lighted Socket Adapter Review

I was shopping at Menards today and these were on sale for $10. I impulse bought a bunch as stocking stuffers. It's been more than once I've been working on something and needed to get a socket in but due to the angles or whatever couldn't get a light in to see so I was working blind. Plus when you are working alone lots of times your only light source is a flashlight in your mouth, and your mouth can't go all the places your hands can...

It's the kind of thing you'll pretty much never use, but when you need it, it will seem like a life saver.

Strictly as a socket, it seems about as well built as all the rest of the sockets coming out of China (which is decent but not superlative) and within spec.

Number one issue is the switch. This comes with batteries installed and a spare set of batteries in the package and a "Try Me" hole in the packaging so you can operate the light and see how neato it is before buying it.

Since I was giving all but the one I'd keep for myself as gifts, I wanted to test them to make sure they worked and probably 50% of the ones I tried at the retail stand weren't working. I thought maybe they were old stock, or a rash of bad batteries, or the switches had been bumped in shipping and the batteries got drained.

I got 5 working ones in my cart, checked out, went home and opened up the one I was keeping for myself to play with it.

And the light didn't work.

Hmmm I'm sure I tested this... on off on off on off on off... still no light. We'll, I guess I'll just go ahead and change the batteries, since they gave me a spare set and all lets see how you do that.

In order to change the batteries you remove a screw which holds the switch in place. I start to back the screw out - suddenly, light!

So I futz with the screw and see that by turning the screw I also turn the switch. And I examine how the switch makes contact, and it's not the best design there needs to be a bit more spring or padding or something behind the contact.

By cranking down the screw pretty hard, I got this into a state where about 75% of the time when I turned it to "on" it would come right on, and the rest of the time it would come on dim (partial contact) or not come on at all (bad contact).

When I had partial or bad contact if I just wiggled a little bit back and forth, eventually I would get light.

Given this problem I have low expectations for durability if used more than rarely, socket wrenches aren't exactly known for being babied. Also if I've been working in the dark and having a problem getting to a fastener in conditions that would benefit from this light, by the time I've get to the point I decide to walk to the tool box to get it I'm probably already more than frustrated and rapidly approaching super pissed off, and when I try to turn it on and it doesn't come on and I've got to sit and fiddle with it I'm just going to get more mad.

Probably at the exact moment I'm trying to use the tiny fiddley movements to make the damn thing turn on and it still isn't just happening and I'm wondering if I should go ahead and change the batteries or keep messing with the switch my wife will come out to the shop and inform me that "It's getting late" and ask me "When I'm coming in" and I'll look at the dark light in my hand and throw it back in the toolbox and start screaming at the top of my lungs that I'll be in whenever the damn job is done and I have no idea when that will be because I'm trying to get to a fastener in a dark place where no flashlight can go and all I have is this damn thing that isn't working and now you want to stand there and bother me about it well you go right the hell to bed if you want I've got things to do.

And that my friends, is why god invented alcohol.

But still a cheap novelty stocking stuffer for the tool guy who "has everything" and something to keep handy in your tool arsenal despite it's shortcomings.

I wanted a couple of pairs of folding scissors to replace a pair I had for years and lost. These are the same style and will work for my knitting when I'm travelling, but I wouldn't hold much hope of them lasting for a long time with more than occasional use. The blade itself is about one inch long and really not up to much more than cutting yarn or thread and the handles are not built for comfort, but again, they'll only be used for cutting yarn. The case is a pitiful little box that - out of three pairs ordered - arrived broken on two. Since the scissors fold, the box is unnecessary so I just threw away the broken ones.
