Rough Rider Knives 573 Camp Knife with Red Jigged Bone Handles Review

This was my second foray into the "Rough Rider" stable. The knife arrived in perfect condition and on the expected date. Nice to be able to rely on quick shipment and gentle handling.

The knife itself was something of a departure from the style of camp knife that many of us grew up with, but not a major one, not a deal-breaker. The main blade was pretty difficult to deploy (actually, all 4 blades were hard to get open), but snapped into position as solidly as one might expect for this style of folder and was shaving-sharp out of the box. The "short blade," as it is described in the listing - not so sharp, and I'm still trying to figure out what it's for. Is it a new style of can opener blade? If so, the little stud is on the wrong side of the blade, at least for right-handers. Is it an extra-wide reamer? Guess I'll fiddle with it a bit and see what it's purpose is.

The screwdriver/bottle opener blade is pretty long for such a tool, but otherwise appears utilitarian. The awl or punch looks like it could be poked through a piece of leather, but it lacks the traditional hole for thread. One could be drilled, I suppose, if that would make it more useful.

The bone scales look pretty nice, and their fit is good. I like natural materials (bone, wood) for knife handles and scales. They look like they'll stay on for the duration (given proper handling and no deliberate abuse). The bolsters have a high polish that has a somewhat brassy luster to it. Overall, it looks like fair value for the money, with some useful features. The bale is a nice touch, traditional on a knife of this style, plenty big enough to add a leather latigo or a lanyard, and it looks securely attached. That's a good thing.

So, 4 stars. Might have given it 5 if it had been obvious what the "short blade" was for.
