I had initially passed this by and thought a smaller hammer drill would meet my needs. Turns out, if you want to go through fieldstone and granite and other really hard stuff, and if you want to drill deeply into said materials, you need this. For my particular project, I needed to drill through a number of rocks of different sizes and composition ~ about 15' if it was all stacked up. With the 1/2" hammer drill and the speeds I was seeing, I think I calculated something like 40 man-hours of work or more, and probably an equal number of drill bits getting destroyed.
I took this out into my yard on my test stone (3-4" thick, maybe 1" deep hole from a half hour's work with the 1/2" drill), and in about 30 seconds finished off that first hole and did another one as well. The next day, over the course of two hours or so ~ with breaks to test fit pieces of stone ~ I was able to complete all my drilling for that particular project.
I was also able to use a ground rod driver and drive in rebar and use a tamping plate to build a small garden pathway, so it proved a useful tool for multiple tasks.
The pictures don't really do justice ~ this is a huge tool. Depending on the use patterns for the day, I found myself putting it in a wheelbarrow to walk it down to the site (along with a number of other hand tools) or cradling it in my arms.
Although it does have anti-vibration handles, I highly recommend using this with anti-vibration gloves as well.
