Aoyue 937+ Soldering System With 3 Bonus Iron Tips Review

I got this packed in the box and the first thing I noticed was how HEAVY it was. I'm so used to using Radio Shack soldering irons (Hey, they're cheap, if you need another tip, just buy another unit) but I quickly realized how much trash they were. I had become so frustrated with the tips gumming and not being able to clean them well alongisd ewith all the oxidation they go through during a quick little solder job... they become unusable for me within 10 jobs. I've tried brass balls they only delay the poor quality tips from failing maybe 1-2 uses. The tips are so loose inside the connector, proper heat transfer isn't usually provided well enough. Lots of temperature fluctuation.

I turned this bad boy on, and within seconds (I think about 5 seconds) the thing was up to temperature. I was socked. And I even tested it when it said 200, and sure enough it was hot enough. Shortly after I noticed how solid the tip was, not flimsy and moving like the RS ones. What i REALLY like about this station is how the cradel grips the iron without touching the tip or shaft. It rests (very CLOSELY) to the bottom, but doesn't touch if you get it in right. I do wish this were a little easier to do and could cradle the iron more easily without touhing anything, but it's not worth knocking off a star from the review.

This thing gets HOT. Within moments of setting the temperature, the iron will reach that temp. I've had to wait minutes for my other irons to heat to be able to melt solder. Even standard 60/40 solder.

I wasn't able to undergo my project though, because there is ONE type of solder that I'm aware that has a melting range between 450C-485C, and it just happened to be what I needed to work with. It wasn't too important I got this job done, but if it were I'd have ordered a much higher grade "professional" iron. I put this to 460C (I didn't want to stress it at max and possibly damage the tips/element when I just got it) and it was able to slightly melt the sodler to the point of making cold arms and "icecicles." I was still very impressed though just with the quality of the unit. The tips are so much better than what I was using prior. Even the handle itself is so much higher quality.

I don't use the solder holder roller because I prefer t hold it in my hand for more precise application, but it is a nice feature. the sponge is thin, but it would serve its purpose completely, except I prefer to use a brass ball to avoid so much heat degredation on the tips touching the cool water, though I'm sure the brass balls aren't that much better as the brass is cool to the touch as well. Not that big of a deal probably but it would concern me some as Iprefer things to never wear out, its just unobtainable. :)

I didn't like the idea of spending more than $30 on a soldering station, but this was worth it. This was well worth it.
