Eastwood 3/4 HP 8" Variable Speed Bench Grinder Review

This review covers the Eastwood 3/4 HP 8" Variable Speed Bench Grinder. I purchased this grinder after reading an Amazon review from someone who said it worked great for "sharpening premium woodworking chisels and plane blades". I work at a medium sized wood shop. Our old grinder (an 8" Craftsman Professional) served this purpose for 7 years until the housing cracked. We used the fine wheel exclusively for sharpening and the course wheel for general use. I was hoping the Eastwood would be an upgrade from the Craftsman. The construction of the Eastwood seems solid. The guards are a little on the small side - but adequate. The work light stem exits the housing low on the back side and is just barely long enough to reach up and over to shine on the work area (the bulb was NOT included). Also, the light will illuminate only when the grinder is running. The variable speed is a nice feature but the motor seems under powered - more like a 1/2 hp. The unit takes about 15 seconds to spool up to full speed and vibrates moderately above 1/2 speed. Both wheels have about 1/8" of wobble side to side. The tool rests are fixed at 90 degrees and are non-adjustable, which severely limits any sharpening applications for this tool. Overall I was a bit disappointed with the unit and due to it's shortcomings I can recommend it for limited general use only.
