Smith & Wesson SWME Micarta Extreme, 10.5" Fixed Blade Knife Review

I've said it before, and I'll say it again...
I'm still a fan of this inexpensive micarta handle series from Smith and Wesson.

I'm a sucker for that satin finish, especially with the huge blade thickness and exposed full tang, AND they include really quite nice leather sheaths. I'm not sure how many are in the series total, but I have 4 of them so far, and have been quite pleased with each. When they arrive, I have found each one to be better than I expected, even THIS one...

Why would I say that? Because I wasn't planning on buying this one.
I like blades of course, but the over aggressive claw shape just isn't my style. It's too frightening. Just plain FIERCE looking, actually. But one day, quite by accident (rolling eyes) it found its way into my shopping cart somehow (whistling, shuffling feet) and got accidentally mailed to me by mistake I guess, so I kept it, out of politeness so my wife couldn't tell me "no!" See?

(blink)

ANYway... it's a perfect match for the others in the micarta handle series, with all the same materials, and all the same minor blemishes from the factory. Over-all, another winner though, if you like the styling.

HOWEVER,.. just a little warning: Besides the aggressive talon shape, there is a wicked-looking swedge on the spine, from the tip, to about 1/3 of the way back. Well... that's not the standard swedge. It's sharpened. I mean SLICING sharpened. Depending on your state and local laws, that could get you in a bit of trouble, if your double-edge blades are frowned upon in your area, so please be aware of that before you decide to order this particular one. Or... maybe you should buy a BUNCH before someone gets wise to it, and pulls them off the market. :D

Size wise, I find this one offers my (medium) hands the most comfortable grip. While the blade shape is certainly the most interesting, I find the front choil to be impossible to use for choking up on the blade. I can't find a reasonable way to safely / comfortably choke up on this one. But, no matter. Clearly, this is not exactly a utility knife anyway.

It came a little dirty, and I needed to trim the front edge of the sheath just a little to get a perfect fit to the blade handle, pretty much similar to all in this series. But at these prices I can live with a few minor issues. I don't know how the steel will hold up under hard use, (I only have one of these in actual use at the moment, and that is fairly light duty). But I will report back with an update when I have something of value to add on durability or edge retention.
