The Black & Decker BDG1200K is a compact, lightweight drill at a great price that's perfect for everyday use around the house and light remodeling jobs. Its 100 inch-pounds of torque are plenty for hanging pictures and shelves, drilling holes for drywall anchors, anchoring furniture, or putting together "assemble yourself" furnishings. And with 12 volts of power, it will do that work for a good, long time between charges.

It has become common for even basic drills to include features once reserved for contractor-grade tools, and the BDG1200K does not lack for them. For example, there are 6 tension settings. Just set the drill to the tension you want. When the drill meets a certain resistance level (for example, when your screw has been set), it will just spin without applying force to the screw. This helps prevent your stripping screw heads and damaging whatever it is you are screwing into. Though fewer than the 20 settings a contractor might need for working with many different screw materials or surfaces, there are plenty for the basic brass and galvanized screws a homeowner would use. The drill also has an easy-to-reach reverse button just above the trigger.

There are a couple of features that set the BDG1200K apart from other basic drills. The most noticeable are the squishy "gel max" pads on each side of the handle that reduce the vibration you feel. That will minimize and discomfort or hand strain you may get from operating the drill, and allow you to grip the handle more tightly for better control when you are drilling into harder woods. Even if you don’t use the drill enough to need their vibration-dampening affect, the little gel pads are a lot of fun to play with. Another nifty feature is the AC adaptor jack in the back of the drill. With most cordless tool batteries, you need to take the battery off of the tool and recharge it in a separate charger. With this drill, you can leave the battery on and plug the drill itself into any wall outlet. It takes up less space and is ready to go whenever you need it. On the other hand, an external charger is available, if you want to use this battery with other tools. The 12-volt battery works with all other Black & Decker 12-volt spring-loaded slide style battery tools, like the BDID1202 impact driver and BDBN1202 cordless nailer. Note: If you do use multiple tools on the same type of battery, it’s always a good idea to buy extra batteries.

If you are going to be taking on larger projects like installing a deck, drilling wide or deep holes into lumber, driving long screws such as fence anchors, you will probably want to consider a heavy-duty drill/driver in the 18-volt or above range, or even a hammer drill, if you are going to need to drive fasteners into concrete or masonry. I needed a drill to use for a variety of "Honey, do" tasks. I was looking for something that was fairly light and easy to use, from a brand I trust, and had enough power to do just about any job. I have had this drill for over a month, and I really like it.

Pros:

Powerful. Yesterday, I drilled 4 1/2" holes throught a 4X4 with ease.

Lightweight. I don't know the exact weight, but it is no heavier than a corded drill I used to use.

Great brand name. I have several Black and decker tools, and they are very well made.

Powerful. Based on the jobs I have done with it, I don't see why I would need more power. It drills easily through wood. Sets screws quickly, etc.

Variable speed. If you have ever tried to put a screw in wood with a non variable speed drill you know what I mean. This drills starts slowly, which gives the screw a chance to catch. You can then pull the trigger more and get the screw in quickly.

Long life battery. I fully charged it when I got it and have used it 7 or 8 times and have not had to recharge it.

Cons.

The Gel Max seems like a gimic. It doesn't bother me at all, but I don't think it does much.
