The steel is impregnated with an abrasive...the packaging doesn't say what it is. Some websites say it's diamonds. The steel does take off metal, but is also good for just "steeling" my knives, if I don't use too much pressure. The steel is well made seems strong, and it fits nicely in the case. There were some other small steels in Amazon from Victorinox, but they were smaller, had no case, and cost more...so I went with the Browning. Aloha, Rudy
