Pros: This item works well when the alternative (replacing a fitting or using a pipe coupling) is more time consuming than simply drilling for 2 minutes. It works better than similar products (e.g., Raptor Socket Saver) that, in my experience, do not hold as steady in the fitting or do not leave as clean an opening after drilling.

Cons: The tool required some minor tweaking to get ideal results on the PVC fittings I used it for. Specifically, the socket end (which fits inside the pipe that you are drilling out of the fitting) allows some play between the socket and the pipe. I experienced this with Charlotte Pipe fittings, which is what goes into about 95% of plumbing jobs in my area. Left unmodified, this play would allow you to shave (drill) too much PVC out of the fitting. The result would be a fitting with an opening larger, and with more play, between the pipe and fitting than is standard.

The other con is that you have to be careful how deep into the fitting you drill (a danger with any tool of this type). If you drill too far, you might drill too much from the flange and compromise the strength of the fitting or joint at that opening.

Solutions: My remedy for the play (suggested by a commenter in a review on a different site) was to wrap the socket end with painter's tape (or masking tape) about 5 times around (3 times for the 2" pipe hog). This simple fix eliminated all play and left a smooth opening that felt like the right diameter.
