Festool ETS 150/5 EQ Random Orbital Sander Review

Folks who have never used a Festool sander will be understandably skeptical when asked to spring for this tool. Using it lays that skepticism to rest.

I own many sanders as I work on boats. The 150/5 EQ has become my first choice for jobs where a 6" sander is required. It is the only sander I own that can rival the results obtained by hand sanding with a block or long board. When attached to an appropriate shop vacuum, it will leave a smooth, flat and scratch free surface if used peoperly. A very useful accessory is the Festool hard pad, which aids in the production of a flat, mirror like surface.

I puzzled over getting the 3mm stroke or the 5mm, but settled on the /5 based on the advice of friends. I have not regretted that choice, as the extra stroke is a faster when doing light fairing, but still leaves a very fine surface for any purpose I have put it to. The speed control is an added plus, but I have to be say I usually sand at the higher speeds and have found little reason to use the slow speed options. By the way, a Porter Cable hose can be made to fit over Festool's proprietary dust port with little effort, so if you already have a PC hose, try using it first before springing for the rather expensive Festool version. I think you will find it works well.

In use the tool is vibration free and is easily guided across the work piece with one hand. In addition, the Festool sanding media is excellent and long lasting when used with a vacuum, and the wide range of available grits means you can always have the right paper for the job.

One of my favorite tools, highly recommended if you do a lot of sanding for finish work.
