I bought this knife last year, and as with all my reviews, I like to gain a good bit of knowledge by applying the product before writing a review. The Tops Knife Company is very reputable with their products and how well they are manufactured. Not once has the question of quality crossed my mind; this knife is built FAR superior to many knives on the market. It comes extremely sharp out of the factory, and I find that a sharpening stone and a little oil kept the blade in great shape.
I took this knife camping with me, and found no shortage of uses. Used it for builing a fire, stoking the fire, cutting up dinner, cutting p-cord, etc. Not bad, but it's weight can tire you after awhile. This brings me to my next point; it's going to be a knife you carry with you as a utility tool, like putting it in your pack instead of on your belt. If you carried this knife on your belt, I feel that it would be more in the way and a nuisance than it would be useful.
It's like the machine gun of the knives; great for heavy jobs, but not for smaller and more common jobs (cutting fishing line, sharpening a stick, etc). If you are looking for an all around fixed blade, I would go with the Tom Brown tracker knife that Tops produces. If it's heavy duty work you engage in, then this would be your knife, although I HIGHLY recommend a smaller, easily-carried pocket knife or sheathed knife for more common practical uses.

SKIL 008-190-SKL Dual Blade Knife Review

I came across this knife combo by accident, but I am sure glad I did! I bought it for a trade show tool kit I carry to shows my company works. I bought this on a one-day sale from Amazon for $49, but it seems like a value (maybe) at twice that price. I gave it as a gift to my son this Christmas, but I checked it over before giving it to him,and I really liked it - in fact, I regretted not buying two of them. High quality steel, beautiful workmanship and a great design. Really nice. I do a fair amount of deer gutting with a 30-year-old Buck, also a 3 1/2" blade (all you need) and, while I can't say this one would do a better job, it would certainly work as well, and it sure is pretty.

Very well made tool. Stands up to heavy duty use such as drilling through railroad cross ties. I would recommend this drill to anyone who has tired of the declining quality found in other name brand drills. Customer support is responsive. The chuck key retainer broke and Milwaukee sent a replacement within the week. My next tool purchase will most certainly be another Milwaukee.

Great Neck TK111 Home and Garage Tool Set, 111-Piece Review

It's a handy little tool set....most everything you need to get small jobs done without having to run back and forth to your work bench. Lightweight / cheap plastic carrying case but if you take good care it will probably last for a long time. Tools are cheap but work fine....you can't expect mechanic grade tools in this quantity for this price. Bought this for work because I'm always needing tools and I have to scavange the entire building everytime I need something. Have a couple of these type of tool kits at home and find myself always using them instead of my expensive tools just because it is so handy to have everything you need in a small tool kit where everything has a place....it stays organized and you don't loose tools because it is plain to see when you haven't put something back.

Ontario Knife Ranger RD 9 Series, Fixed Blade Knife with 9.5" Black Powder Coated Steel Blade, & Tan Micarta Handle, Overall Length 15.25". Review

I just got this one. It chops as well as any of my knives, and maybe a little better than the RTAK II from Ontario. I'd put it in the same class as the Cold Steel Trailmaster. It chops as well, and it has a tough protective coating to resist corrosion. The blade is slightly longer and slightly thinner. I should think the Trailmaster would be harder to break, but really either knife is plenty tough.

The handle on the Ranger knife is micarta (canvas micarta, unless I'm mistaken). It gives a good grip in all conditions and is practically unbreakable. There is also a generous hole for a lanyard and the steel tang is exposed (unlike on the Trailmaster), giving you something to hammer on if you need to baton the knife point-first.

The nylon sheath is good, but perhaps a little TOO generous. It is about two inches longer than it really needs to be. With this knife, carrying is going to be a potential problme due to its large size-- it would be nice to have a sheath that is not needlessly bulky. The sheath includes a front pocket for storing a sharpening stone, or whatever. The retaining strap is secured with velcro. The RTAK's sheath is also a little too generous though, and it is a significantly larger knife to start with.

The biggest problem is in comfort. The knife has a sharp little edge on the base of the handle. It really digs into my pinky. If I were always wearing gloves when using this knife, it wouldn't be a problem. Or, if I were good with tools, I'd grind and polish the handle scales and the exposed tang to round them off. Instead, I've wrapped that portion in black electrical tape. Seems to work okay, but the handle is still not as comfortable and secure as the RTAK or Trailmaster.

This is undoubtedly a good knife, and made in the USA. It arrived sharp (although not as sharp as I'd like) and it held its edge very well through some hard use. There are some rough spots, and I'd recommend wearing gloves when you use it, but the most annoying spot can be remedied with tape, as I suggested. The RTAK and the Trailmaster are about the same money, and either would likely be a better choice. The RTAK is larger, but more comfortable and useful for big jobs. The Trailmaster is more compact and easier to carry, but just as useful for most jobs. The Trailmaster is maybe 20% more money, and is foreign made, but is on the whole a more suitable knife.
