...for work on small single/twin cylinder 2 and 4 stroke engines. Motorcycles, scooters, lawn equipment, outboard motors, chain saws.....any small engine using a magneto or CDI type ignition system. I bought this to properly adjust/check the governor on my power equipment. I also use it to set the idle and mixture on all my small-engine powered stuff including my dirt bike.

This instrument looks like an old school tach/dwell meter (for those of you who remember what that device was used for) and has a nicely damped analog meter. It is the fact this is *not* a digital meter that makes it so much easier to use than those digital mini-tach/engine hour meters. This is a quality device made by a Canadian company called Strandix. When I opened it up to install the 9 volt battery I got to see the clean and neat assembly of the electronics and circuit board. Overall this wireless tach is a fine and useful instrument that inspires confidence in both its accuracy and longevity.

The tach works by picking up the EMF generated by the spark plug. On the back of the unit is a "spring" antenna. Simply flip up the antenna and touch it to the spark plug lead or get it to within 3 inches of the spark plug or plug wire. Push the spring loaded battery switch to "on" and you're reading RPM information. The meter is nicely damped and gives stable readings ...not jumping all over the place as the digital meters do. There are two RPM ranges Low and High. The "Low" range reads to a maximum of 5000RPM ...fine for most lawn equipment. The "High" range runs to a max of 15,000RPM.

I searched a lot for a tach designed for small engines and this Strandix unit is about the only choice out there. It sells here on Amazon for $88 (best price) and with shipping pushes the price to just under $100. Is it worth it? Well, if you need a good, useable small engine tach this is about the only choice you've got. If your a tool junkie, you'll love it. If you're looking for a high quality small engine diagnostic instrument ...this is a "must have".
