I purchased the Stanley chisel primarily because of the name. I have purchased other Stanley wood working products with good results. This particular chisel is a good basic tool for general shop work, but can't compare with the $100 cabinetmaker's chisels. The FatMax series are designed for rough work and can't hold an edge like chisels made with A2 steel. A-2 steel chisels (high-end chisels) will hold an edge extremely well, especially when sharpened at an angle of 30 degrees or higher.Having said all that the Stanley handle fits my hand which makes it comfortable to use and I like the tang that extends through the plastic grip to form a metal striking cap- very strong. The edge needs to be sharpened before use. A well-tuned chisel will help you do the work intended with a minimum of effort. And a well-tuned chisel, performing the task for which it was designed, is a truly pleasant and confidence-building experience. Proper honing of a chisel relies on properly flattening the back. As with plane irons, a flat, polished back is essential to a sharp edge.
